Definitions of Consumerism

CONSUMERISM.

This economics terminology is often talked about and flagged whenever new things crop up in the market place and especially in social media. Big brands create this atmosphere of utter chaos and much brouhaha over a product which is otherwise something we already have had in a useful but older version, something we don't actually NEED to live a full life and simply teaches us to be NEEDY. So beyond my opinions about what consumerism is, here's a more objective take (OR NOT) of what this is all about.

Merriam-webster.com defines it as:
: the theory that an increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable; also : a preoccupation with and an inclination toward the buying of consumer goods

The Urbandictionary.com defines it as:
1. The practice of conspicuously buying flashy, expensive items and expecting them to fill the voids in one's life.

2. A pejorative used to malign people who enjoy material luxuries, implying that it's impossible for a person do so without having an unhealthy fixation on them. Usually used as a sour grapes excuse to hate people who can afford more luxuries than one's self.

And the description goes on to say....
"Consumerists are slaves with white collars. Advertisements have them chasing cars and clothes, working jobs they hate so they can buy shit they don't need. They are the middle children of history. No purpose or place. They have no great war, or great depression. Their great war should be a spiritual war. Their great depression is their lives. Raised by television to believe that one day they'll all be millionaires , movie gods and rock stars. But they won't."
"All you read and..
Wear or see and..
Hear on TV..
Is a product..
Begging.. for your..
Fatass.. dirty..
Dollar."

Which is the better definition? This last quote, feels pretty close to what I think consumerism is all about. Yes I'm talking to you, FAT@**. LOL
